We couldn’t just leave you hanging wondering why Jaguar and Pagani aren’t on our list. Well, there are just a ton of hot cars and only so much paper to write on…or page space here on the internet. Above is a 1961 Jaguar E Type drop, one of the sleekest cars to ever wear the Jaguar emblem. Below is a Pagani Huayra BC. Words to describe the Pagani are hard to come by, so we will just leave it here for you admire.
Some of these used engines are more common than others, but the only real limitations are your wallet and your imagination. Without further ado let’s dive in to some of the best used engines available, broken down by country of origin.
The powertrain lineup should remain the same. This means that all Ford Focus hatchbacks will continue offering EcoBoost engines. The sporty ST model should be available straightaway, but the RS might skip MY 2019 altogether. The question that remains unanswered is: will the Blue Oval stick with the 6-speed automatics or will they offer something more complex in that regard? That’s something we’ll have to wait a bit longer to find out. For now it would seem they’ve played it safe, but that doesn’t mean the new model won’t be better than the current Focus.
Of course, no good list of crazy cheap cars would be complete without some American muscle. Of course, the Ford Mustang is iconic as any of its counterparts, so we sprung for the 1996-98 SVT Cobra. Unfortunately for the purists, this is the first model Mustang that saw Ford retiring its 5.0L V8 in place of a new 4.6L Modular unit. The Crown Victoria actually shares the same engine, albeit in a slightly different configuration that makes about 100 fewer hp.
Hatchbacks were smaller, much more economical and still more practical than the favorite American body style: the sedan. The same philosophy works today as well, more or less, which is why we’ve gone through the trouble of rounding up the best hatchbacks 2019 is bringing our way, which we’ve also already done for MY 2018.
Fuel economy and reliability are both profound (as is expected), but the model year difference is where you should pay attention. The ’90 and ’91 models are going to be your best bet because, after some minor restyling, Honda decided to give the CRX four-wheel disc brakes and new wheels, which can make a world of difference as far as handling is concerned.
The Honda Civic Type R is hands-down one of the most exciting hot hatches on the market. As such, it was always in contention for one of the best hatchbacks 2019 will bring our way. The tenth-generation Honda Civic debuted for MY 2016 with hatchbacks following a year later. The coveted Type R arrived later still, but at least it’s not going anywhere, and the Japanese automaker won’t be fixing what ain’t broken anytime soon.
Today, Buick is looked upon as a grandpa car. Luxury and refined(boring) lines dominate the automakers lineup. Hell, Buick has always been one step away from being a Cadillac, so the world was a bit surprised when the company started building the Skylark-based GS line. In the GS line, the best offering has to be the GSX Stage 1.
This may come as a surprise, but the Acura TL is actually a fantastic car. While most people assume this large luxury car is quite expensive, there are actually plenty of models as new as 2012 that are going for less than $12,000. What you get for your money is essentially a gussied-up Honda Accord that makes 305 hp in the SH-AWD model thanks to a 3.7L VTEC V6.
The 22R and 22RE used engines can be scavenged from just about any 1980s or 1990s Toyota light truck, or 4Runner. Good luck finding someone who wants to part with one though, because these used engines are gems and so are their cars.
This beast of a Camaro proves used engines can perform better than new ones. Its owner wanted something he could drive every day and on long trips, so had a full-custom LS2 built to 500 horsepower and 430 torques. And damn, does it look mean.
The Koenigsegg CCXR Trevita tops our list of hot cars for sheer flamboyance. This is a car that Liberace or a rapper would have loved to drive. The body of the CCXR Trevita is built using a diamond impregnated carbon fiber and kevlar weave. Yes, this car is literally made with diamonds!
The thing that makes these rides so special is that they offer performance that new models do at a fraction of the price. While some of these cars could easily still be compared to new models from other segments, they’re still very affordable for what they can do.
