The hatchback first appeared in Europe during the early sixties, and some examples even date back to the late thirties and pre-WWII. It took them a while and a little bit of good fortune, but they finally migrated to North American markets in the early seventies. Of course, global downsizing in the car industry imposed by the oil crisis of 1973 played a major role in that; suddenly, the practical yet cumbersome station wagon (mostly powered by V8 engines) became a heavy burden on the average car owner’s budget.
Short Internet research did reveal that of the most common OTR jobs (Over The Road), long-haul truck driving probably pays the best. According to some Internet sources, striking a deal with a good trucking company may land you an opportunity to take home $70,000+ before bonuses. According to truckerclassifieds.com research, the state that pays best for trucking jobs is Mississippi, with an average of $68,000 per year.
You should know, though, that when buying a car like anything from this list, finding one in pristine condition is going to be nearly impossible. You want grandma drivers or guys that obsessed over maintenance and had temperature-controlled garages. What you’ll probably get instead is someone who has driven the beans out of it and wants to ditch it before it becomes a problem. Or any number of less-than-savory situations. So as is the case with any vehicle purchase, make sure to inspect the vehicle thoroughly before purchase if you end up going with any of these crazy cheap cars!
Under “Truck Driving Jobs” entry I could have entered ten separate options tanker hauls, oversized hauls, ice road trucking driving jobs (it’s not just a reality show), OTR jobs, and the like. However, I will try to sum it up all in one entry. See, depending on work experience, licenses you’ve acquired and driving history, you may actually have a number of options regarding truck driving jobs some pay better than others.
As always, the Volkswagen Golf offers better interior quality and overall feel than all of its direct competitors, and GTI models hit the sweet spot in terms of bang for your buck. The GTI has been an exceptional car for decades now, and will again be one of the best hatchbacks 2019 brings our way.
Any car made before 2008 or even the second generation of the S2000 claiming to be a club racer is a fraud, which is why you’ll find some examples as low as $10k. Don’t be fooled though while these are crazy cheap cars, they’re not that cheap. Expect to spend around $22k for a genuine Club Racer.
If you want to get on board with a driving job as soon as possible, registering with a ride-sharing agency may be your best bet. Uber and Lyft are the most popular options and they do offer a fine opportunity for drivers. Best part? You do not need any special training, license or experience. Sure, some requirements still exist:
My 1000RR recently decided one of its rods belonged outside the crankcase. When I started looking at used engines I found out you can get a 2008+ 1000RR engine, one that’s good for 200 horsepower with only mild tuning, for under $2000. And my mind started running. Smart cars, MGs, Minis, Miatas every small car in the world would be a lot crazier with a redline of 15,000 RPM. Lucky for me another deep-pocketed gearhead has lived this dream too.
Yet, if you do it right (and often), tips can definitely make up for some of the difference. Being a delivery driver definitely has some of its perks. If you love to drive, you will be on the road forever. As for money, expect upwards of $25,000. Sure, it really, really helps if you are delivering in wealthier cities, areas or states. It’s also a great idea in college towns, where you could easily pull in around $70 in tips alone in an average shift.
The only problem with these crazy cheap cars is that they are getting more expensive as time marches on. With plenty of examples reaching upwards of $80,000 at auction, you may be intimidated at first. Rest assured there are plenty of examples resting comfortably around the $25k-$30k range, and we even saw one with more than 600,000 miles that was still going strong!
The 2JZ is like the LS of Japanese engines: the mere mention of it calls to mind the sound of a 240sx bouncing furiously off its rev limiter. It’s as easy as changing your shoes to drop a 2JZ into a variety of cars, and because so many Japanese cars used engines from this family, there are literally thousands of them to choose from and they’re all pretty cheap.
For a defunct automaker, Plymouth sure has made its way onto our hot cars list a surprising number of times. If the company had been able to keep building interesting cars like those produced during the muscle car era, it wouldn’t be defunct. Of the hot cars built by Plymouth, the best ever has to be the 1970 Plymouth Hemi Barracuda.
They all received new, larger touchscreen displays and numerous interior updates that make them more advanced than their predecessors. Trims have been shuffled as well and the Golf GTI now comes in the S, SE, and Autobahn grades with each raising the price tag by between $4,000 and $5,000.
