Not only does the Civic Type R perform and look more aggressively than its conventional siblings, but it also sports a number of upgrades you won’t be able to see with your eyes. One such upgrade is a front-strut suspension Honda calls the Dual Axis, which almost completely eliminates torque steer using a carefully mapped engine computer which allows the Type R to run like a charm.
If anyone deserves to have too much time and money on their hands, it’s someone who will stuff a Ferrari 458 engine into a Toyota GT86. Enter Ryan Tuerck, an American professional drifter from New Hampshire who ran the internet a few years back with his wildest creation to date, dubbed the GT4586.
That’s why builders of the 240sx, FD RX7, and all kinds of custom applications have used engines from the LS family they’re all durable, well-built, and cheap to modify.
Equipped as an option on the Gran Sport 455, only 400 of the GSX Stage 1 packages were sold in 1970. The package boosted the performance of the lightweight 455 engine to 360 hp. That isn’t too impressive until you hear about the GSX Stage 1’s 510 lb-ft of torque. That was the highest torque output of any American production performance car until the introduction of the Series 2 V10 Dodge Viper in 2003.
Pick one of these crazy cheap cars up for your next autocross project for around $4,500, assuming you can actually find someone willing to sell. These cars are only getting harder to come by, and you can likely kiss any expectation of the car having under 200k on the clock goodbye.
While driving fine cars wearing white gloves may seem awesome, you would also be responsible for maintaining the fleet of automobiles, running various errands, and keeping all of the registrations and insurance coverage current. A lot of work for sure.
The Blue Oval hatchback hasn’t been fully redesigned since the third generation’s debut in 2012, and that’s more than evident. With competition already freshened up, the Focus has definitely fallen out of…well, focus. It’s aging rapidly and the new model couldn’t have come at a more opportune moment. The 2019 Ford Focus won’t offer that many changes overall, though; the shape remains mostly unchanged as if it’s yet another mid-cycle refresh we’re talking about and not a full makeover.
Subaru rarely makes mistakes, but in the case of the earlier EJ251 used engines there’s a high incidence of head gasket failure and coolant passage clogging. This is easily addressed during a reseal by replacing the stock single-layer head gaskets with multi-layer ones, having the heads machined, and putting it all back together. The later EJ253 engines didn’t have this problem.
Of course, even a 1.2-liter rotary makes upward of 130 horsepower, so that’s the tradeoff. Tuned examples can make over 250. 250 horsepower sounds a lot better when the entire car weighs under 2000 pounds; such is the case with this 13B-powered 1966 Volkswagen Beetle. It runs a 10.5-second quarter mile and packs eight times its original horsepower.
Diamonds and movie star lifestyle aside, the Lyken HyperSport can set pavement ablaze. It is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.7L flat-six that produces 780 hp and 708 lb-ft of torque. The builder, W Motors, claims the Lyken HyperSport has a top speed of 245 mph. It will jump from 0 to 60 mph in a scant 2.8 seconds and will hit 125 mph in just 9.4 seconds.
The Land Cruiser was offered with both petrol and diesel engines, which also caused the name to vary a bit here and there. Not all models are FJ40s, but the FJ40 is arguably the most iconic, which is why it’s listed specifically. You’ll want to look specifically for the 2F engine, offered in post-1975 models, as this 4.2L gasoline engine is good for 135 hp and 210 lb-ft of torque. There are quite a few diesel options as well, which make an average of 94 hp and 159 lb-ft of torque.
Of course, no good list of crazy cheap cars would be complete without some American muscle. Of course, the Ford Mustang is iconic as any of its counterparts, so we sprung for the 1996-98 SVT Cobra. Unfortunately for the purists, this is the first model Mustang that saw Ford retiring its 5.0L V8 in place of a new 4.6L Modular unit. The Crown Victoria actually shares the same engine, albeit in a slightly different configuration that makes about 100 fewer hp.
Some engines just aren’t worth it. There’s a reason everyone does an LS swap it’s trusted. Even if you do a total rebuild at great expense, some used engines have inherent weaknesses or parts are hard to come by.
