The only problem with these crazy cheap cars is that they are getting more expensive as time marches on. With plenty of examples reaching upwards of $80,000 at auction, you may be intimidated at first. Rest assured there are plenty of examples resting comfortably around the $25k-$30k range, and we even saw one with more than 600,000 miles that was still going strong!
The current third-generation BN Mazda 3 is hands-down one of the most handsome hatchbacks on the market. It follows the Japanese automaker’s exterior design philosophy that’s become a hallmark feature of all Mazda vehicles in the last few years. The 5-door hatchback Mazda 3 is $1,300 more expensive than its 4-door sedan counterpart, but it provides almost double the cargo space with the rear seats folded. Other than that, there are no real differences between the two body styles. MY 2019 will, however, bring at least one important update to the powertrain department, and likely an entire body revision.
Everyone throws one of these used engines into a drift missile, but that’s been done. We’d rather see a turbocharger and a supercharger piled onto this straight-six to create a 900-horsepower road weapon. In stock form, these yachts used engines from BMW that were prone to failure at over 100,000 miles, since few Rolls Royces have ever seen that kind of use.
Most resellers can provide at least some idea of mileage, service history, and overall condition, but whether you’re digging through eBay and Craigslist ads or picking up a parts car in town, there are some things you need to know about used engines before you take the plunge.
That performance does come at a cost, though. Apparently, the EPA has officially rated this as the least fuel-efficient wagon for sale in the US at 14 mpg. Let’s not forget that this car also runs the quarter mile in about 12 seconds, so is fuel economy really going to be our concern here? I didn’t think so.
Lucky for me somebody with more money already had that dream, and they made it happen with one of the best used engines available. Diego Loza built this mad machine around the mill from an AP2 S2K. Underneath it’s way more Honda than BMW, but nobody’s complaining because this thing looks mean AF. I suspect purists miiiiiight not like it, but f**k haters.
Not only does the Civic Type R perform and look more aggressively than its conventional siblings, but it also sports a number of upgrades you won’t be able to see with your eyes. One such upgrade is a front-strut suspension Honda calls the Dual Axis, which almost completely eliminates torque steer using a carefully mapped engine computer which allows the Type R to run like a charm.
My 1000RR recently decided one of its rods belonged outside the crankcase. When I started looking at used engines I found out you can get a 2008+ 1000RR engine, one that’s good for 200 horsepower with only mild tuning, for under $2000. And my mind started running. Smart cars, MGs, Minis, Miatas every small car in the world would be a lot crazier with a redline of 15,000 RPM. Lucky for me another deep-pocketed gearhead has lived this dream too.
When I was young I rode to school in the back of a Nissan Stanza, and not once did I consider it to be a performance car. Little did I know that Stanzas used engines from the venerated KA line, the ones found in the early 240sx.
Whether it’ll receive a new CVT gearbox remains to be seen. The sedan will come with a standard 6-speed manual and, for the first time, an optional CVT for upgraded fuel economy, which should see the new Forte sedan deliver up to 3 mpg more than the current model. The 2019 Kia Forte will also feature 54% more high-strength steel in its frame which should ensure it gets top crash scores.
They all received new, larger touchscreen displays and numerous interior updates that make them more advanced than their predecessors. Trims have been shuffled as well and the Golf GTI now comes in the S, SE, and Autobahn grades with each raising the price tag by between $4,000 and $5,000.
Later 240sx models used engines of the KA24DE derivative which had double overhead cams and four valves per cylinder, as opposed to the KA24E’s three-valve SOHC setup. This resulted in higher power, torque, and redline figures. As far as used engines go, either one is a reliable starting point for your next swap.
Evade has been judged to within 1% of perfection at numerous shows, including 995 out of 1000 points at the 20th Annual Eckler’s Winter Nationals. Not a bad feather in the cap of used engines.
