Pontiac switched to the three-speed TH-400 equipped with a Hurst Performance dual-gate shifter. This shifter was dubbed a his/hers because it could be shifted automatically in Drive or could be used as a manual clutchless shifter. Basically, it was an early version of the modern Sport selection in some cars.
In 1967, the Pontiac GTO had a new engine under the hood. The old 389 had been bored out to become a 400. When the new engine was equipped with a Rochester Quadrajet four-barrel carb(in the high output versions only), it was capable of 360 ponies and 438 lb-ft of torque. The 1967 GTO had an upgraded gearbox as well.
Just as with the 1953 Corvette, we are being very specific with the GTO. GTO started out as a trim package for the Pontiac Tempest back in 1964 and became a stand alone car for the 1966 model year. Like many muscle car enthusiasts, we think the 1967 Pontiac GTO was the first true muscle car, starting the race for power supremacy between automakers.
The Shelby Cobra is another iconic roadster on our list of crazy cheap cars, and is definitely not a name that most people would associate with the phrase ‘crazy cheap cars’. While genuine examples will surely cost you hundreds of thousands of dollars (if not more than $1 million), did you know you can get your hands on a replica that does the same stuff for less than the price of a new Mustang GT?
Okay, we all know the LS is the king of used engines, but it’s an unspoken rule that if you mention engine swaps you have to mention the LS so let’s get it over with. Now the stuff of internet memery, the LS swap began as the most economical way to get a light and reliable V8 into a small space.
The tricky thing about the Grand National, though, is that it was seemingly improved upon every year. It started with 200 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque in ’84, and by ’87 it was pushing 245 hp and 355 lb-ft.
Diamonds and movie star lifestyle aside, the Lyken HyperSport can set pavement ablaze. It is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.7L flat-six that produces 780 hp and 708 lb-ft of torque. The builder, W Motors, claims the Lyken HyperSport has a top speed of 245 mph. It will jump from 0 to 60 mph in a scant 2.8 seconds and will hit 125 mph in just 9.4 seconds.
Now, this is not something I expected to reach this list of driving jobs, but here it is. It’s actually quite common especially in massive cities. You know, where people have more important things to do than feed their pets and drive them to the vet in time?
Smarts originally used engines under 1 liter in size, and you can pick up a rolling shell for under 3k easy. That means you can have this much fun for under 8k fabrication included. Try doing that with a 5-liter ‘Stang.
The subcompact hatchbacks might not offer best-in-class efficiency or the most powerful of engines; it neither wins the cargo room war nor does it sport a class-leading set of features. Yet, it does all of the above more than admirably and offers a well-rounded package of perks that simply can’t be overlooked. It especially excels in the cargo room department where its folding rear seat does wonders. When fully folded down, Honda’s Magic Seat increases the Fit’s starting 16.6 cubic feet of cargo space to a whopping 52.7 cubes. Magic seat indeed.
The 2JZ is like the LS of Japanese engines: the mere mention of it calls to mind the sound of a 240sx bouncing furiously off its rev limiter. It’s as easy as changing your shoes to drop a 2JZ into a variety of cars, and because so many Japanese cars used engines from this family, there are literally thousands of them to choose from and they’re all pretty cheap.
We have covered a few North American hot cars, but we haven’t covered a North American built supercar. The one that comes to mind immediately is the Ford GT. We say North American built because the car was designed in the U.S., but built in Ontario, Canada.
If you are up to it, love to drive, and know how to drive a manual, then look into UPS, FedEx, Amazon, USPS and other. Work really hard and you’ll surpass that $70,000 mark. Sure, delivering packages for a big company is far more lucrative than any other package delivery job. So, while you can deliver pizzas, kebabs or whatever, do not expect to earn a lot.
