Not only does the Civic Type R perform and look more aggressively than its conventional siblings, but it also sports a number of upgrades you won’t be able to see with your eyes. One such upgrade is a front-strut suspension Honda calls the Dual Axis, which almost completely eliminates torque steer using a carefully mapped engine computer which allows the Type R to run like a charm.
That performance does come at a cost, though. Apparently, the EPA has officially rated this as the least fuel-efficient wagon for sale in the US at 14 mpg. Let’s not forget that this car also runs the quarter mile in about 12 seconds, so is fuel economy really going to be our concern here? I didn’t think so.
How can you build a list of hot cars without a Ferrari? You can’t. Some may scoff at the Ferrari 488 J50 as old hat; they would be fools. Granted, it is three model years old now, but styling like this never goes out of vogue. On top of amazing lines that pay homage to the cars built over the 50 years Ferrari has been in Japan (hence the J50 moniker), the 488 J50 is all about blinding speed.
The hatchback first appeared in Europe during the early sixties, and some examples even date back to the late thirties and pre-WWII. It took them a while and a little bit of good fortune, but they finally migrated to North American markets in the early seventies. Of course, global downsizing in the car industry imposed by the oil crisis of 1973 played a major role in that; suddenly, the practical yet cumbersome station wagon (mostly powered by V8 engines) became a heavy burden on the average car owner’s budget.
Italian automaker Alfa Romeo has built many hot cars over its 100-plus year history. One of the hottest Alfa Romeos has to be the 33 Stradale. 18 examples of the 33 Stradale were hand-built between 1967 and 1969. Being hand-built, each car differed slightly from the others. A few examples featured double headlights, others single headlights. Even the postilion of the wiper arms are slightly different in some examples.
In other words, the 2019 Honda Civic Type R won’t be bringing any unnecessary changes. For around $34,000, you’ll be getting a whopping 306 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque courtesy of a turbocharged 2.0L 4-cylinder engine which generates 23.2 psi of boost and redlines at 7,000 rpm.
The 488 J50 is powered by a 3.9L V8 equipped with two twin-scroll turbochargers. The powerhouse produces 661 hp and 561 lb-ft of torque. The twin-turbos help thrust the 488 J50 from zero to sixty in 2.9 seconds and it can run the quarter mile in just 10.45 seconds. Run it flat out a bit more than a quarter mile and you will hit the top speed of 205 mph before you know it.
The 5-door compact luxury plug-in hybrid hatchback from Audi doesn’t come cheap. The A3 e-tron Sportback starts from $39,500, while fully stacked models easily surpass the $50,000 mark. Although that’s a lot of money for a compact hatchback, the plug-in hybrid Audi A3 is one of precious few cars in its segment. With the BMW 3 Series undergoing a full redesign next year, and the Grand Turismo hatchback model likely leaving the game by then, the A3 Sportback will remain one of the only German luxury compact hatches on the market.
Nevertheless, driving jobs like this do not require a lot of qualifications. Some do require a commercial driver’s license or Department of Transportation certifications and physical strength. Really, physical strength you have to be able to deliver that 70 lbs package to the door with a smile on your face. More on that on the application of course.
The Lyken HyperSport is another diamond-encrusted supercar. Buyers have the choice of either 420 diamonds in the LED blades of the headlights or rubies, yellow diamonds, and sapphires(you know, if plain diamonds are not your thing). The Lyken HyperSport also features a holographic display on the center console with interactive motion features and gold stitching in the seats. These hot cars have two claims to fame…they are one of the most expensive cars ever sold and one was crashed through three skyscrapers in Furious 7.
The rest of the car is important. Inspect bearings, bushings, and overall cosmetics to get an idea of whether the previous owners took care of things. Check for oil weeps and coolant residue on the block and heads and for signs that someone’s been in the engine bay before.
Sure, car manufacturers have their own test car drivers but they tend to be professionals who are into professional driving their whole life. However, there is a whole other type of factory test drivers. If you have a college degree in automotive or automotive engineering or have been in the automotive industry for years, you can actually land a job as a factory test driver. In short, you could drive prototypes of upcoming vehicles, affect the tune of the finished product and enjoy it all while simply driving in different conditions.
Of course, even a 1.2-liter rotary makes upward of 130 horsepower, so that’s the tradeoff. Tuned examples can make over 250. 250 horsepower sounds a lot better when the entire car weighs under 2000 pounds; such is the case with this 13B-powered 1966 Volkswagen Beetle. It runs a 10.5-second quarter mile and packs eight times its original horsepower.
